Relief vs. Repair By Matthew Nolan of P2K Most of the people I treat come to me in some sort of distress or pain. Usually the first visit we end up talking about relief versus repair. It is important to discuss this because I think that most people equate the two. The “normal” scenario is: 1. I experience pain. 2. Pain causes me great distress 3. I take a pain killer 4. pain stops. 5. distress stops, problem solved. The main issue for me, as a therapist, is that you may have temporarily turned off the alarm system, but you may not have solved the underlying issue that was causing the alarm in the first place. Seems like a simple thing to understand right? Unfortunately it isn’t that simple for people. In today’s society of instantaneous everything, no pain equals fixed. I find using a smoke detector analogy works. Your smoke detector goes off, you scramble around trying to find the source of smoke but don’t find anything. You wave a plate in front of the alarm until the it stops making that damn noise. Sometime later it goes off again, and you attempt to find the source but don’t so this time you take out the battery. Problem solved? I don’t know about anyone else but I wouldn’t sleep soundly wondering if there were a smoldering fire in the walls or furniture of my house! So why do we accept the same noise (pain) as “normal” in our body? Oh, I’m getting old, I have arthritis, I have an old injury….the list goes on. We are never really encouraged to fully repair and correct our movements. We are told to stand up straight but it is the how we stand up, sit up and walk that make the difference. That is what I want my patients to take away from our time together.

It's time to see, Hillary at The Heeling Hut to sweep, swirl, and relax your muscles with Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage . Wanna know why? Well, after a few of Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage sessions, you can expect to experience better posture and easier movement as well as sweet relief from muscular pain! I've been giving Ashiatsu Massage to Dallasites since 2011 and they all rave about the benefits they experience from just one session. Here's the deal... Barefoot Massage, sometimes called Ashiatsu, is a massage that uses deep compression strokes which glide over your body. Gravity combined with centrifugal + centripetal movements can create a structural change in chronic soft tissue damage. We use compression strokes along the lumbar region and paraspinals that can relieve muscle spasms and open the intervertebral foramen. This helps give the surrounding nerves more space and relieves any pressure on the nerve that might be causing pain. The movements used in my Barefoot Massage escape sessions help to decompress and elongate your spine. These movements can dramatically stretch shortened muscles relieving discomfort and back pain. It also provides a deeply relaxing experience + is often referred to as the deepest, most luxurious massage on the planet. During a Barefoot Massage session, we use a monitoring technique called the "pain scale" to ensure that the client is always in charge of the amount of pressure being used by the therapist. While Ashiatsu is a form of deep tissue work, the client should never feel pain. Many clients have reported a relaxing benefit and we like to keep it that way! Don't fear the foot :) You as the client are always in charge during the massage. Scheeduling your next ashiatsu barefoot massage is easy and an experience that you don't want to miss if you're a deep tissue massage lover I'll see you soon! Enjoying hours of restful sleep is on the top of my personal self care list. I don't know about you, but I've always loved sleep. It just seems to be the perfect reset button for me. If I'm feeling stressed or overwhelmed, I do my little night time ritual and go to bed early. I wake up rested and feel like I can focus on problem solving with a clear head. Lately, many of my clients have been talking to me about their lack of sleep these days. They say that they are having a hard time winding down in the evening. Of course we know that massage helps people get better quality of sleep and eases insomnia so they are already in the right place to received sleep related benefits. Recent seasonal changes and lunar events can also make it difficult on our sleep patterns. Some people turn to alcohol or prescription medications to help them achieve restful sleep. I checked out the long list of side effects some people have experienced from medications, so I thought that I'd write about some natural ways to catch some high quality zzz's. Lifestyle: First, consider your current lifestyle. Look at it from a holistic point of view. That means examine all of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of your life right now.
Make some changes to your lifestyle that feel good to you and see if it has a positive affect. I also love this list of questions to ask yourself when you're feeling overwhelmed. It's a big help to me when I need to put things in to perspective. An excellent self care list! Bedtime routine: Some of my favorite bed time routines are taking a hot bath with bath salts and massaging my feet with an aromatherapy salve. I also love to do a few restorative yoga postures to get my body ready to sleep. Spinal twists are my absolute favorite before bed. Sleeping space: Now, set up your sleeping space. Make it cool and dark. Consider removing electronics from your bedroom. Make yourself a retreat that you enjoy going to every evening. I always have a book and a flashlight on my bedside table so I can read because i've found that it puts me right to sleep. Find out what works for you and make it easy to access. Some other suggestions are aromatherapy eye pillows or deep breathing exercises. I've also included this great pillow spray recipe below the picture. Recipe for a simple pillow spray: 2 oz empty and clean spray bottle 1 tsp. vegetable glycerine (can be found online) to help disperse EO's Distilled or filtered water 7 drops of Lavender ( Lavendula angustifolia) essential oil 7 drops of Ho wood (Cinnamomum camphora ct linalol) essential oil 6 drops Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) essential oil First, fill the bottle almost to the top with water (make enough room for the other liquids that you're about to add). Then, add essential oils drop by drop. Next, add your vegetable glycerine. Put the top on the spray bottle and shake it up. Spray your pillow before bed and enjoy! Did you try the pillow spray recipe? Share your experiences in the comments. If you made alterations to the recipe, which scents did you use and why?
Top Ten Reasons to Get a Massage by Michele Cook, LMT - Body Ache Escape Massage Center, Columbus, Ohio
#10: No 2 year olds allowed in the massage room. #9: Annoying co-worker gave you a wicked headache. #8: Your husband is a literal pain in the butt. #7: While drag racing that teenager, you couldn't turn your neck to check if you were winning. #6: You want something good to brag about at your next card club. #5: You've been golfing a 9 on a par 3. #4: While trying to show your daughter your old cheerleading move you pull...something. #3: Your morning run has become a run, walk, limp. #2: The in-laws have overstayed their welcome. and the #1 reason to get a massage You have become a monster! What is your #1 reason to get a massage? What if we could let go of the expectation that life should be other than what it is? This question really peaked my interest as I sat + listened to one of the presenters at my iRest Yoga Nidra teacher training last summer. Acceptance has been one of the hardest life lessons for me to learn and I'm still very much a student! I love the idea that one day I'll be able to fully accept the unpleasant things that come my way, welcome them + respond to them in the most appropriate + peaceful manner. For now, I practice yoga nidra. Yoga nidra is a state of mind in between being awake and sleeping. You may have experienced this in your life. That peaceful place where you're not fully awake yet but your mind is aware of whats happening around you. During the practice of yoga nidra, we enter this in between state of mind and do different meditation exercises. When the meditation ends, I feel a deeper sense of peace. I know I have the ability to create a safe place in side myself where I can visit anytime my life gets too stressful. It's true that we can create a lot of our own struggles just by not accepting what is happening in our lives. Things happen that we have zero control over + we bare the load of self doubt, shame, guilt, + resentments. Over time this wears on the spirit. We are not in control of ourselves + we become reactive instead of responsive. We don't make loving choices + switch over to survival mode from all of the stress + overwhelm. We begin to seek things outside of ourselves to offer us comfort. Living in survival mode 24/7, especially in a big city like Dallas, taxes our physical bodies and wears us down. Choosing to live a life where we are thriving instead of just surviving day to day is much more fulfilling + we have the ability to make real changes for the better because we are thinking clearly + responding from a place of confidence. It's that time of year again...
Our Summer Sale is just a few weeks away and I'm getting really excited!! I love doing my package sale and being able to offer my clients a great escape away from the oppressive summer heat that is slowly but surely creeping up on us again this year. I was hoping that all the rain would keep the temperatures down but it's already climbing up in to the high 90's. My exclusive package pricing makes it easy to schedule a massage session more often. Which is perfect during the summer when you don't really want to be outside and if you are doing out door activities, they are probably working some new muscles that you haven't used in a while { yard work, swimming, water sports}. Ouch! For one day only {the first day of summer}, I am holding an online massage package sale. It will run June 20th from 1:00 am until Midnight and then it will disappear. Want to receive reminders, alerts, and the sale link delivered to your inbox? Sign up for my newsletter and you'll be all set.
